The story

A king in the marshes.

In the winter of 878 Alfred of Wessex had lost nearly everything. The Danes held the towns, the army had scattered, and the king was hiding on an island in the Somerset levels with a few dozen men. The story everyone remembers is the cakes. The one that matters is what he did next.

He did not build a bigger army. He had the law translated into English so people could read what governed them, raised a chain of walled towns so nobody was more than a day's walk from safety, and wrote down how it was all to be kept. That is the spirit we are trying to build in: present without getting in the way, open to inspection, and run from here by people you can write to.

Four things, all of them true today.

Kept on this island, and copied to another. London under UK law; a second copy in Falkenstein every night.
